Ever since I was a little girl, I have been fascinated—and frightened—by death. Over time, I came to understand that to truly live, we must confront our own finiteness. When We Were Us is not a film about death, but about life: family, first love, memory, food, water, and the fleeting moments we long to preserve. Liam’s Super 8 camera becomes a way of holding on. Yet memory is never objective; it shifts with emotion, leaving small gaps between what happened and what we remember. Visually, I want the film to feel observed from the edges—through doorways, windows and shadows—as if we are quietly witnessing a family’s most private moments. Light and darkness become part of their emotional language, reminding us that one cannot exist without the other.
